When StatCounter released its global operating system figures for August 2025, one line on the chart stood out. See chart below. After months of steady decline, Windows 10 unexpectedly gained back a few points of market share, nearly crossing paths with Windows 11 in a reversal that was puzzling at first. For an operating system officially heading toward end of support this October, the uptick was not supposed to happen. Yet the data suggest that the move is neither an anomaly nor a resurgence of preference for Windows 10, but rather the result of market mechanics in the refurbished and secondary channels.
